2008 Achievements

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters we were able to help thousands of people last year. Here are some examples of the positive effects Concern gifts are having in some of the world’s poorest countries:

Emergencies

In Ethiopia, severe drought in 2008 left over 6 million people in need of emergency assistance. Thanks to the support of our donors we were able to distribute emergency food supplies, water and seeds which benefitted more than 450,000 people.

Livelihoods

In Chad, 618 families each received two goats – one male and one female – to enable them to start breeding livestock. We also trained 65 people in animal feeding techniques, who in turn have trained a further 5 individuals each, passing on the benefits in their communities!

Health

In Ethiopia, 297,278 people benefitted from our health care, malaria prevention and nutrition programmes. In one area health centres reported a drop of 71% in malaria cases.

Education

In Somalia, 9,323 children benefited from our education work. We provided training for 287 teachers, built three new schools and repaired 15 others. We also helped 156 older girls gain access to vocational skills training.

In Mozambique, we provided educational materials to more than 10,000 orphans and vulnerable children.

HIV and AIDS

In Rwanda, our HIV outreach activities supported 7,669 people in remote villages to undergo voluntary HIV testing. We also helped 320 people living with HIV and AIDS to improve their income and access to food. And we set up 43 AIDS clubs, which use drama and competitions to raise awareness on HIV prevention, stigma and discrimination.

And these are just some of the examples of people you have helped. A huge thank you to everyone who donated in 2008.
